Wow, I was very surprised to log on and see that people can use any old emoticons in comments, now? And whenever someone uses one it ends up in your messages... kind of creepy, but it made me very happy to see people enjoying the work and utilizing it in such a way. Even if I was creepily eavesdropping on their conversations.

I had originally made it as a joke. I remember that day-- my friend and I were in high school, and we were bored during study hall, so we uploaded these:1

(That was also back before there were thumbnails for deviantwatch messages. So people would post misleading titles as a means of setting up a punchline when you clicked on them.)
I remember we were laughing the entire time. Like "OKAY MAKE THE CAT START GLOWING NOW!!!!".
Wow, that was eight years ago.

I have noticed that the aesthetic and tastes of DA haven't changed much in ten years. It is still very fursona, and anime, and 8-bit internet. Maybe even moreso now, because these are the users that remain.
